Dwell & Occupancy

The two different dwell measurements, why they differ, and how live occupancy works.

BitOculus reports dwell two different ways, and the distinction matters.

Average Dwell Time (camera view)

How long visitors spent within the sensor's field of view — the entrance zone. It updates continuously through the day. Use it to understand entrance behaviour: a rising value can mean queues forming or people lingering at front-of-store displays.

Average Store Dwell (true visit length)

How long a visit lasted from entering the store to leaving it, computed by matching each person's entrance to their exit during the sensor's end-of-day analysis. This is the number to use for "how long do people actually shop here" — it updates once per day after closing, alongside Unique Visitors.

The two will differ, sometimes a lot: a 12-minute shopper may only spend 20 seconds in the entrance zone. That's expected.

Total Dwell Time

The combined camera-view dwell across all visitors in the period — a volume-weighted engagement number. Staff badge-wearers are excluded.

Current Occupancy

How many people are inside the monitored zone right now, summed across your online sensors. It's a live value: the period buttons don't affect it. The small caption shows how many of your sensors are currently online — occupancy only counts zones whose sensor is reporting.
